I Wasn't Procrastinating, I'm Intentionally Slowing Down (Listen to My Podcast at Normal Speed, Though)
YEAR SEVEN OF "...AND ALSO WITH YOU" CAN BE FOUND HERE!!
I meant to post about this here one whole week ago but I'm here now: my good friend Meys and I have been producing a wonderful show called "...And Also With You", which comes out every May 4th and consists of us reviewing Star Wars Episode IV one minute each year. You might have heard about it, I mention it about once a year. We rank the minutes, talk about our lives to use the show as a fucked-up time capsule, and committing to a lifelong bit for fun and negative profit. Posting about this on my website would have been the clever marketing thing to do but I was busy posting elsewhere and a week goes by so fast these days. I thought "Oh, well, it's too late now. Who's going to want to listen to it now that it's not fresh?"
Annoyed at that thought, I decided this was an intentional move to practice slowing down actually. The world demands we run ourselves ragged trying to catch up to each latest thing and we're never encouraged to go back and visit even the slightly older things.
I recently read this fantastic translation of Gilgamesh and it struck me how little it matters that this poem arrived to us in fragments from thousands of years in the past. Most everything the work is concerned with still matter; Gilgamesh's desperate need to cast his name into the clay of history (plus the death of the one person he truly loved) led him down the fruitless path to immortality. Luckily for Gilgamesh, his tale was sick as hell and he became immortal anyway after a ton of people told it and scribes preserved his feats on clay tablets. Sure, he probably wasn't eighteen feet tal and all that, but we are still talking about the guy.
I don't want to be forgotten either. I worry that if I don't always have a new thing ready to debut into a world ready to toss it aside the moment they're done with it, if they pick it up at all... I don't make what I make for attention but I wouldn't complain if I could get some more of it! It's hard out here for attention-needers. To fight back against my own attention deficient tendencies, I'm posting about this yearly event one week late, right before bed.
Let's all try to slow down. You ever thought to yourself, "aw, I missed that show, no one's talking about it anymore" or "no more updates, it's a dead game"? You would benefit from ignoring that thought and engaging with something "old" on its own terms. Try it, or don't! If you don't take my advice now, I can just pretend you're taking that slow too.
