Breaking The Summer Single Streak
I failed to release my Annual Summer Single. After 10 years, I couldn't make it happen. After I struggled with completeing last year's single on time, I took a break from producing music. Then the rust set in and I'm now finding it very hard to, uh, scrape off. I'm not sure how someone deals with actual rust. I'm also not really clear on how to deal with my musicmaking rust! So many terrible 8/16 bar loops that go nowhere now clutter my hard drive.
I never took music theory lessons or went to school for composition. I just sort of hit my head against Garageband throughout middle and high school until the songs started to pour out. They just kind of happened! Now that they're harder to come by, I feel lost. I've shifted gears and have been working on ambient music, which I find to be less stressful since there are fewer rules than in my preferred bedroom synthpop domain. Not to say it's been easier, it's still quite a struggle to get anything out of my synthesizers I'm happy with. But I have to keep chipping away at it. It's important to me to be a musician, for some reason. It's been a while since it gave me the joy it once did and I think it can again.
The A-side is maybe salvageable but I wrote a vocal melody check my throat couldn't cash. 41 vocal takes broke me. The B-side is done and I almost released it on its own to keep the streak going. While it's a fun little thing and I enjoyed the process more than the A-side, it's not really something that can stand on its own and I felt bad releasing not-my-strongest material just to make a number go up.
Ah hell, as a treat, here is the B-side to the abandoned 12th Annual Nicky Flowers Summer Single. Enough time has passed that I don't feel so miserable about sharing it.
